What is the art work?

biblio-, an exhibition by thirteen artists/students of Chelsea College’s Research Department, upends the conventional gallery format by putting the catalogue on the gallery walls; and placing the art objects on coffee tables, to be picked up and ‘read’.

In biblio- the catalogue texts, or ‘theory’, that normally support exhibitions are here actually projected, in particular ways, on every square inch of the gallery walls. The conventionally recognised art works – pictures, sculptures etc. – are placed in the centre of the gallery on coffee tables, surrounded by sofas, so that gallery visitors may view them in a relaxed way and have a tactile relationship with them: they can pick up them up; handle and touch them; and discuss them informally with other visitors.

Both texts and objects are created by thirteen artists who are research students at Chelsea. The exhibition appears a kind of matrix: with texts and objects engaging and inter-acting and ‘playing’ with each other. Sitting in the gallery, one may sense a blurring of distinctions between the theory and the art object.

Three associated activities support the main exhibition:

• The books that are the sources of projected texts are exhibited in a special collection in Chelsea’s Library, for visitors to see and read: 8-20 March. The Library is open from 09.30-19.00 Monday to Thursday; and 09.30-17.00 Friday. Visitors should phone 020 7514 7773, to make an appointment to view the books. Admission: Free.

• There will be a public seminar in the Triangle Gallery, on Wednesday 8 March, 18-19.00 to discuss further ideas provoked by the exhibition. Admission: Free.

www.chelsearesearch.org will be launched as a blog, a Chelsea research forum, to continue the discussion. Admission: Free
